The odour control technology employed by Rentokil Initial utilises active molecules derived from natural plants. At its core lies a proprietary formulation of botanical extracts sourced from over 300 different plant species, which are scientifically blended to create a range of plant-based solutions designed to eliminate various types of odours. The active ingredients in the plant extracts effectively capture odour molecules in the air and undergo a series of reactions with them—such as acid-base reactions, catalytic oxidation reactions and redox reactions—thereby eliminating or reducing odours.

Odours in refuse collection points

Refuse collection points are used for the temporary storage of waste. In daily life, waste is categorised into four types: recyclables, food waste, general waste and hazardous waste. Why does rubbish smell so bad? The main reason is wet waste; as the organic matter in food waste decomposes, it releases malodorous gases such as ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, methane and benzene compounds, which combine to form a foul odour.

  • Air Pollution: Piles of rubbish ferment rapidly, releasing an unbearable stench — large quantities of harmful gases such as ammonia and sulphides, which gradually pollute the surrounding air.
  • Health hazards: Rubbish contains many pathogenic microorganisms, and the odour attracts pests. If not cleared promptly, it is likely to become a habitat and breeding ground for the ‘four pests’—rats, cockroaches, mosquitoes and flies. The spread of these pests can easily trigger a series of infectious diseases, seriously affecting people’s health.

Bathroom odours

Bathrooms contain numerous fixtures—floor drains, washbasins, toilets and urinals—all of which can be sources of odours. Furthermore, in public toilets with high footfall, such as those in large shopping centres, restaurants and cinemas, odours can be particularly difficult to eliminate if cleaning is not thorough, or if there are issues with dampness and ventilation. The primary source of bathroom odours is a mixture of gases produced by the fermentation of proteins in excrement by microorganisms. The main malodorous components include ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and other gases, as well as hydrocarbons such as methane.

  • Harmful to Health: Odour pollution in bathrooms irritates the human senses, causing nausea, discomfort, headaches and dizziness. Prolonged exposure can also irritate or damage the respiratory system, skin, mucous membranes and eyes.
  • Spread of Disease: Persistent odours in the bathroom often indicate the proliferation of pathogens and disease-causing bacteria. Bacteria adhering to the surfaces of bathroom fixtures and fittings can lead to cross-contamination and the spread of disease.
